Provinces cannot end LG system, says Danyal

ISLAMABAD: Former Chairman of the National Reconstruction Bureau, Danyal Aziz, on Sunday said that the presidential immunity enjoyed by the local government system would expire after Dec 31. However, he said that provinces cannot end this system according to the Section 141-A of the Constitution. Speaking to newsmen at the International Conference organized by Pakistan Norway Forum here, he said that protection enjoyed by the LG system under the sixth schedule would end on Dec 31. He said provinces could make amendments in the LG system, but added that they could not pack up the system. The former NAB chairmen urged on the need to immediately hold the LG elections. To a question, Aziz said that not even one nazim is listed among the 8000 corruption cases surfaced in the media recently.Addressing the conference, he said that Pakistan and Afghanistan were facing governance problems due to ongoing war against terrorism. He stressed that the government should award provincial autonomy in order to strengthen the democratic institutions so that the governance could be improved.
